Hello, I just got an older G4 Power Mac and I have a question about networking it with my PC's. I have a Win2k system that has a DSL connection hooked to it. It's also on a ethernet network with my Win2k laptop over a 10base hub. Now I have the Mac on the network, I can use connect to server to the other two computers, copy files, and share the internet. The Mac can browse the net with Safari & Firefox just fine, but when I hit software update it times out after the progress bar moves about a quarter of the way over. I can't figure out why it isn't finding the internet connection. If I couldn't get out when surfing that would be one thing, but it works fine except for this one issue. I plan on getting a router when I get some free cash but for the next month or so I'm stuck to this config. I'm running 10.3.8 btw, which I had to download by itself from the Apple website.

Thanks for any help.

I think the issue is basically the Internet sharing function on the PC and how it's configured. Is it what Win2K provides or some other application? Can you share files between the PC and the Mac? That might be a work around; simply download the files to the PC and then move them to the Mac. Not perfect, but not too bad.

Also, don't think that a router will cost you a lot of money. I've bought a router that, after rebate, cost me $11 (less than $30 before the rebate). OfficeDepot has this two port SpeedStream router for under $17. I used the big brother to this router (4 ports instead of 2) for a long time; it's perfectly adequate. They don't have to be expensive.

One thing: when you use a router for DSL, make sure you tell all the computers connected to it that they're on a LAN, not that they connect to DSL. You have the router do that for you-much easier.

I'm just using ICS that is a part of Win2k. This same Mac did just fine with 9.0.4 on there, but when I upgraded to 10.3 I couldn't get the software update to work.

It sounds to me like there's some port or other that's not open on the PC, and you need it for Software Update. Are you using a firewall with the PC?

Yeah, Sygate Personal Firewall. I have it set to allow the Mac's IP though. Plus I've shut it down and tested it and it didn't work then.
