I have a 700mhz G3 iBook with an Airport card in it. I have 2 other Macs connected to a wireless router via ethernet, with this being the wireless Mac I use.

The router works, both of my other Macs are online and can be networked.

Now the iBook.... the thing worked flawlessly for 2 months now. Whenever I booted it up, it'd pop right on the network and would be fine.

I could go to the public library and hop on at any point... it just worked.

Over the weekend, I was up at my dad's, who has another wireless network. It was difficult to get online, but I changed some setting, and there I was, surfing away on the couch.

OK, Now, I go home, and for the life of me, I cannot get my iBook on to my network. I've deleted, recreated, anc changed every setting over and over, I've shut down and rebooted the entire network of macs, including the cable modem and router, even repaired permissions... yet can't get online!

What's even odder is, I boot up the iBook, I see in the menu bar that the Airport card recognizes the router, it gets on the network, and shows I have a strong connection. I can see the other macs on the network as well.

However, I cannot connect to either Mac on the network, even though i see them (it counts down in a window to timeout), and the Network Status window says "Airport is connected, but your computer has assigned itself it's own IP address. You cannot connect to the internet."

Or something basically worded like that.

ANY ideas at all? I'm going crazy! I figured it'd be all or nothing--like I could get on, or I couldn't. To be able to "sort of" get on... it's maddening.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, the router is a "b" D-Link wireless router....

Anyone?

Last night I went ahead and shut everything down, and unplugged eveeything. Then, I slowly powered up, one piece at a time. I then reset my router as per the instructions that came with it.

At that point, under Network settings, Airport had the "green dot" and said I was online and connected to the internet. I went and connected wirelessly to another Mac on the system, and all was fine. Then, I opened Safari, and it said I wasn't online!

I went back to the system prefs, and the Airport card still ahd the green dot. I hit the button to refresh the DNS, and i was back to square one. It has a strong connection, it sees the other Macs on the network, but it has assigned itself its own IP and I can't get on the 'net

To check something else out, i went to another hotspot in town, and I got NOTHING.

Failed Airport card? Stupid setting I'm not thinking of???

HELP!!

You say you've deleted and redone everything. EVERYTHING? What have you done, so we can see if you've missed something.

I'm 99% sure it's something you did when you connected to your Dad's network, but without knowing exactly what you have done, I can't puzzle out what you've missed.

hey, thanks for responding. The status now is I can see my 2 other Macs on the network, and I can connect to them, and copy files between the Macs. That's real good, as I need that at the very least! ;-)

Currently, the network status window has a yellow “dot” and the message “Airport is on and has assigned the computer an IP address. You may not be able to access the internet.”

Ok, here's everything I'm remembering having tried:

Hardware:

I opened the iBook up, took out the Airport card, then reinstalled, making sure it was firmly seated.

Rebooted dozens of times.

TCP/IP

1) Manually: I've manual duplicated all settings from my hot-wired G5, making sure to change the last 3 numbers in the IP address to various numbers from 101 - 199, and including the IPv6 address! In doing this, I actually got the Airport "dot" to turn green, and the network Status window also says "You are connected to the internet using Airport." HOWEVER, I open a browser and I still can't get on.

2) DHCP: I've renewed the DHCP lease repeatedly, which normally wipes out anything manually I've done, and further the router address disappears. No good.

3) DHCP with manual address: did this, again changing the last 3 numbers of the IP address. No good.

Network Port Configurations:
1) I've turned off Ethernet and Modem

2) As per Apple's advice (off HelP) I've forced an IP address change by unchecking "Airport", hitting "Apply Now" then rechecking and hitting "Apply now." No good.

AppleTalk:
I believe I tried this on and off and nothing changed. I don’t believe this matters, however....
Router:
I powered all down, every Mac, the modem, and the router.

I then powered up the modem fully, and reset it. CABLE modem, if that matters.

Then, I powered up the router, and used the ol’ paperclip to reset it.

I then slowly added my Macs. Both hot wired Macs are on just fine. Laptop now sees network, but can’t get onto the internet.

Router settings;

I went through repeated attempts in my admin panel, setting up various new settings through the wizard. Right now I have it set up with NO firewall and no password protection--it’s WIDE OPEN, and still can’t get on. Each Mac has it’s own personally firewall software running just in case (not Apple’s--3rd party)

I tried doing the WEP 128 Hex, ASCI, however every time I entered the password, I got an “error connecting” message.

Internet Connect:
Tried it all... tried “other network” tried manually typing in network name (set on router), turning card off then on again, WEP, etc.

At one point I eventried doing the is it the 801 connection? I deleted this as I knew it was the wrong connection to use.

I’ve named, edited and renamed every setting. Redone every thing from scratch.

What else.... I’m probably fogetting more and will post as soon as I can remember more.

thanks again
mg.

Wanted to clarify an earlier post:

I also went down to the library near where I live which is a hot spot. I wanted to isolate if it was MY router, or my Mac.

Now, I've had Airport set to connect to any network Automatically, and had no problem jumping on and off at home and at the library without having reconfigured a thing.

Today, however, the iBook saw no network--nothing was coming up. I sat right below the router, even, to get the closest I could (it's up high) and my card saw nothing, and Internet connect had nothing to select under "Specific network."

In the past, I'd get the "Your network is not available, but would you like to join..."

Today, nada.

Have you tried turning off WEP entirely on both the router and the laptop? It's a good thing to try eliminating any roadblocks while you're working on a connection issue, and this is one of the toughest of the roadblocks you're likely to find.

If things work properly with encryption turned off (remember, do it for both ends!), then you've nailed what the problem is, and we can start narrowing down what you need to do to fix it. If it doesn't help, then that's one thing we don't have to consider.

Ok,went into the router settings. Under wireless settings, I have enabled SSID, channel 6, and diabled both network authorization as well as disabled WEP.

I'll check out the iBook now, although how exactly do I disable this on the iBook?

Also, would it help if I put up a screen shoit of ther Network Status window?

Oh, god... I finally figured it out.... and seriously, I feel like running around in circles, pounding myself in the head with a frying pan screaming "DOH! DOH! DOH!"

I have Netbarrier installed on this iBook. For some reason, it flagged the IP address 192.168.0.1 as an "Intruder" and put it on the stop list!

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Ouch! It sounds like that hole you shot in your foot is going to hurt for a while. Since you didn't mention any firewall, but were fairly thorough in everything else you said, I didn't think about it either. I guess I'm going to have to make a troubleshooting checklist and put that at the top.

I'm very glad you figured this out, since I was stumpped.
