no fuss, no muss
5 min from install to talking over the net
Reasonable plans from just $14.99/month
start-up costs only $58 (for the router, shipping and 1st months service)

I use lingo and I've been quite happy with their service. Especially if you call Western europe which is included unlimited in their $20 plan. Pretty amazing. I had earthlink before which uses vonage and that was great too, but no free international calls.IF I didnt' need to call abroad, I'd go with vonage since I think the quality was slightly better. If you need to call europe, lingo is the way to go.
PS. Same with Lingo, if you refer somebody they'll give you AND the person you've referred a $25 credit... let me know and I'll give you my username so we can both get the credit!

Vonage... been using it for 4 months now with no problems, and if you don't have a router, they mailed me a Linksys router/VOIP adapter, otherwise just go to Best Buy and buy the 2-port VOIP adapter for $50 and then get the $50 rebate and it'll be free. By the way, if you know someone with Vonage, and they refer you, both of you get a free month (not just the person already with Vonage as most co's do). Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try Lingo. I really need the unlimited calls to Western Europe feature. Has anyone tried BroadVoice?
I tried Skype, but €10 went pretty quickly.
I bought a Plantronix headphone/mic set that works nicely, but I think I'll try a regular phone adapter or a VoIP WiFi phone.

I use a number of voip services: Free world diallup, nikotel and skype.
Free world dialup is very useful because there is a number in the uk that you can phone which will connect you to my fwd account. What this means is that anyone in the UK can phone me here in Brunei (borneo) for the cost of a local phone call. VERY sweet. I can use FWD to phone any of the 800 numbers in the UK and US for support of products etc.
I use nikotel to call people who don't have voip, such as friends and relatives in the UK. I pay less than US 2c a minute, which is about 1/40 what it would cost me to use the regular phone here.
I use skype to call other friends who have skype.
I have a sipura 2000 phone adapter, which has two pots lines. I have one for fwd and one for nikotel. I don't have to leave a computer on (although I do 24/7) and when someone phones me, a regular phone on my desk rings.
Look into getting a router with quality of service options (linksys wrt54g with sveasoft or similar firmware) that will allow you to keep the voip line good even if you're using a computer to browse or download etc.
Hope this helps,
J.
