I noticed that there are a few topics discussing this but no real answers.

I have a D-Link 614+, an iBook G4 (Airport Extreme Card), a PowerBook Ti (Airport Card) and a G3 iMac. Up to now I've had the iMac wired to the router and the two laptops connected wirelessly. I've moved though and have a multimedia cupboard now with all the networking kit in it. So the iMac can't connect to the router direct anymore.

The adapter and airport card for the iMac are going to set me back 150 EUR. I can get an airport express for around 100 EUR. I plan to connect the iMac to the Airport Express and to use it as a wireless to ethernet bridge. I know that my router works with the Airport Express as a range extender. Does anyone know if this setup will work?

The alternative would be to buy two Airport Expresses and to ebay the old router.

Search for "WDS" and "Airport" and you will find a whole number of answers, most of which you are not going to like. The easy way is to get all-Apple products, as they are the ones who have their act together on this point.

Unfortunately most products will only bridge with their own kind-Apple with Apple, Linksys with Linksys, etc. The "wireless bridge" products don't always play nice with others, either. I haven't figured this thing out at all; I don't know why they can't play bridge when you want them to, and access point when you want that.

Damn! Thanks for the help guys. Looks like my choice is 150 Euros to get an Airport Card for the iMac or 160 Euros to get two Airport Expresses. Think I'll get two Expresses especially since I'll be able to ebay the old D-Link and get something back.
