Here's the deal:

cable modem and DLINK 614+ and a iBook 2001 (regular Airport) This iBook has great reception, four reception waves in the Airport Status icon in the menu bar throughout the house and 2-3 bars in my back yard.

Last July, I got a PowerBook G4 at work. At home, it would get three waves throughout the house and nothing outside.

This past week, my PowerBook suddenly could not see my airport network two rooms away from the basestation. One room away, I would get 1 or 2 waves of reception, and it sometimes drops out completely.

In the same room as the basestation, I get 2 or 3 waves of reception, and if I hold the the computer within a foot of the basestation, I can get 4 waves, but it drops to 3 sometimes too.

Meanwhile, the iBook remains rock solid, maxed out with reception bars.

What are your thoughts on this situation? Is there a way to hardware test the card itself?

Thanks for your advice.

It sounds like the antenna cable has come loose. Go to this Apple Knowledge Base Article for instructions on how to get to your card. (I took a stab at which PB you had, but you can find similar instructions if I got the wrong one.)

It should be fairly obvious if the antenna cable is plugged in, but if it isn't in ALL THE WAY it might not give you the performance it should.

Some people use a piece of tape across the connector and card to make sure it stays connected.

Unfortunately, the airport card is much harder to reach than I thought. I dont have the torx driver and I cannot get to the card. I'll have to call this one in, apparently. Thanks.
