Hi,

I'm new here, been lurking for a while. I've searched the archives and haven't found anything so I will try here.

I just installed Little Snitch 1.1.1 and I keep getting this message:

smb client wants to connect to xxx.xxx.xxx on port 445 (microsoft-ds)

I wasn't sure what this meant so I googled the message and got a bit alarmed because it seems to be associated with a virus. Is this correct? I've set Little Snitch to 'deny forever' all of this but it keeps asking periodically. Is this a virus? If so what should I do? If not I apologize for the stupid questions.

I should also mention that from the day i've had my ibook i've had the firewall set up to not allow access to anything, it has never been turned off.

Thanks in advance!

p.s. not sure if it matters but my system is a new ibook 12" 1.2 running OS X.3.7

Port 445 is used by Windows (and thus those trying to work with Windows) for NetBios-over-IP. NetBios is how Windows computer's find eachother for filesharing (and other purposes). It is how the network neighborhood works.

The virus part of the conversation is that some people discovered a venerability in the Microsoft program that manages this function, and used it to infect other computers. This is not an issue for MacOS X.

Larkost,

Thanks for your help! I had a feeling that it was just paranoia on my part but I wanted to be sure.
