Not a silly suggestion. I've done that a couple of times when travelling, just using the free trial disks. They're about the only isp that is truly global these days. You don't have to use their software just to get access, and it's reasonably priced for the worldwide service you need. I'd never use it at home, but if I had to travel then it's an easy option.
I used to have an account with IBM, when they were an isp and that was superb. Got me logged in from some wierdly remote places, but they stopped doing that about 8 years ago.
