I have about 650 songs in my iTunes on a G4 notebook that I want to transfer to my iMac. I was told that the best bet was to use firewire. Start one computer holding down the "T" to get into target mode and then transfer the file from one hard drive to the other. I did this and it seemed like it worked. The song titles show up on the iMac. But they won't play. I don't think the audio actually transferred, I think just the title information did, because the whole thing went across in about five minutes. Can't believe that much music would transfer in five minutes. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Can you find the files you copyed over ? Try to make a search for .mp3/.aac and see if your files appers. Then you can add them to iTunes using the Import dialog found in File -> Import.

If it took about five minutes I'm sure that the files were acctually copied to your iMac. Firewire is very fast, and it takes less than 5 minutes to transfer my 1100 songs from powerbook -> firewire disk.

Thanks for the tip. The original music had an extension of .m4a. Not sure what that is but I did a search on the iMac, and the files did transfer. So I went to the File menu in iTunes to import them but there was no import under the File menu. Checked the version and it's 1.1.1. Obviously, it's been a few years since I've upgraded. That computer is not connected to the internet so I'll get it on line and see if I can get an upgrade. Hopefully, that'll let me import the files and take care of my problem.

I'm not sure (as always), but I don't even think iTunes 1.1.1 can play .m4a files (.m4a is MP4, so 'newer' MP3). The songs were probably imported fine, iTunes 1.1.1 just doesn't know what to do with them. If you just get iTunes updated, the songs will probably play without you having to import them.
