As a small office we use an old G4 tower running 10.3.6 as a sort of over specc'd NAS server. Basically the machines n the office (3) store files remotely on the "server" mac and we all save our work to and from there over a Gb network. In theory all Ok and for the most part it has been, however we are experiencing a persistant and growing problem of the serer connection timing out.
Since the G4's hard drive is kept fairly busy with serving files I cannot see why it should time out so often (and the regularity is slowly increasing!). The annoying part (apart from constantly restarting the G4 is that under classic (Quark 4) this results in the loss of all unsaved work.

OK so I guess we shoud really be using either a proper NAS server (but ones with Gb networking are not cheap, or more likely OSX server, but my nowledge of how to configure this is essentailly zero.

Any work arounds on offer, before I take the X server plunge!

Thanks

Andrew

If all you need is something like NAS, then get a proper NAS solution. They are built to make things smooth for you and to handle all the interfacing transparently. I know they're expensive, but how much is your time (and sanity) worth?
