Welcome to MacNN, Tony. First of all, if both of the Macs in question have Firewire, it's usually a better choice to use Firewire Target Disk Mode. You should also be aware of the new Setup Assistant's system migration feature, which is an option if you do have two Firewire Macs. If you just want to do an Ethernet transfer, you can network the two Macs and turn on File Sharing, but the process can be more complicated that way due to permissions.

Sure. I may have scared you away from File Sharing - it really is not much more complicated, as long as you remember to login as a registered user. If you login as a guest, you'll only have access to the Shared folder. Take a look at this great guide. And concerning the physical network connection, all you need is an Ethernet crossover cable connected directly from the ethernet port of one Mac to the other, OR two regular ethernet cables and a hardware router.

Wait, what are you trying to copy? If you're trying to copy OS X from one computer to another like that, it's not going to work. OS X is much more complex than the classic Mac OS was, and it relies on the precise installation of many invisible files, in addition to specific file permissions, in order to function. But if you're just copying your data folders/files over, there will be no problem. When you copy something from a network drive, it's then independently on the other Mac's drive. Just think of network drives as locally installed drives - all the same rules apply, except transfer is slower.

Nope. . . It must be installed rather than copied. Sorry if I confused you. If you can't install it, the only other choice you have is to clone your iMac's drive on your iBook using Carbon Copy Cloner.
