I have an old iMac which has no airport card, and I also have a first generation airport basestation. I am wondering if it is possible for me to connect the base station to the iMac with a crossover cable and connect to my existing wireless network in this way. The base station in question is not being used at all currently.

Can this be done at all?

Does your old iMac (you didn't provide any model info) have an internal slot for an airport card? If so, then disassemble the graphite and slip its airport card into the iMac.

The graphite can't act as a wireless client in a wireless network.
