Hello,
I'm setting up a wireless network in my house, and I'd like to use my old blue and white G3 tower on the network, but it predates airport. I can't seem to find any USB adapters that are mac compatable anymore. Now, my cable modem is coming with a free netgear wireless router. If i had airport express plugged into the cable modem, and the netgear plugged into the G3, would that be enough to get it going, or do i need a USB or PCI card to get it to work?
Thanks,
Dan

If you wanted a USB wireles adapter, there are some Mac compatable ones out there. The D-Link DWL-122 is a good inexpensive one, the drivers that is ships with can cause some problems, but the updated driver can be downloaded from the D-Link website.

I think DLink makes a PCI one too. You could always use the netgear as a wired router, and latch the airport express onto that as just a wireless access point to the existing router. Then you can plug the G3 in through the wires.

you're definitely gonna need to buy a PCI or USB based wireless adaptor for your G3. Not sure if any of the current PCI cards actually support macs at all, which sucks.. i did a quick check and netgear, linksys, dlink all don't support macs.
your only solution might be to get a very long wire.. or hey, mac minis are real cheap now, and well worth the upgrade from a G3 !

Another good solution is a wireless to ethernet bridge. These connect to the the ethernet port of your computer, need no drivers and are platform and OS independent. Once you set one up, you can plug and computer or ethernet device into it and connect it wirelesslly. As a bonus, these have better range than internal or USB devices since they have external antennae and their own power supplies.
