Hi All
I'm hoping someone out there has already been through this and has some options
to share.
My wife is going to Italy soon (business/pleasure for her, and some peace for me) and will be taking her Ibook 366mhz 10gig 384ram.
At home I have a new 1.42 Emac on dial up. We still cant get adsl or any fast connections.
She will be staying in hotels and some private accommodation.
If she can hook up to a phone line and get connected after I have taught her to configure
the network prefs. what would be the cheapest and easiest way to communicate with myself
in Australia. Is talking an option or should I just set up a yahoo email account and type
messages to each other?http://forums.macnn.com/newthread.ph...read&f=92#
Cheers

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Personally,
I like Skype. Talking IS an option on dial-up and the audio on Skype sounds much better than on others, IMO.

If for some reaon, the audio doesn't work out or is choppy, Skype is also a cross-platform Instant Messenge and can transfer files between platforms no problemo. Its completely free for computer-computer connection but there is an optional pay service where you can call a regular landline phone from your computer. (I've tried this a coupla times and it works well too).

The only thing I'm worried about for you ... is that iBook running OS X 10.3 or later ??

Thanks Krusty,
10.2 is the OS the ibook is running.
I only have dvd installers for 10.3 and the ibook doesnt have a dvd player.
Can I install 10.3 on my ibook from my emac?
Thanks for the info about Skype.
I downloaded and now have it on my emac, since I read your reply.
Have you used Ivisit? just in case I cant get 10.3 onto the ibook?
Cheers

I have used iVisit but its a little bit strange. Its like a chat room community rather than a typical one-to-one type thing like Skype or iChat. Not sure how it does for audio. Video worked OK (very small) but on dial-up you might have a problem. But, by all means, give it a try (or keep it on both machines as a backup in case you need it).

As far as installing 10.3 from the eMac, what I would try is booting your iBook in Target Disk Mode and then install from the DVD drive in your eMac (if possible). Look up Target Disk Mode in your Mac help files .. basically, you can connect the eMac and iBook via a firewire cable and when you boot the iBook in Target Disk Mode, it will appear as an external drive to your eMac. You should be able to load the DVD in the eMac and choose the target disk (the iBook) as the volume on which to install 10.3. I'm not sure if this will work if you just have Software Restore disks for the eMac, but it should work if you have a retail copy of 10.3

I highly recommend Skype as well. Definitely worth the extra effort of installing 10.3 if that is necessary. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice.
I am getting some install discs of Panther to use on the ibook so
that we can use skype.
Sounds like the most reliable.
