Hi,

I feel stupid not being able to figure this out...

My wife and I are having to share a dialup connection for this wek, until our BB hookup comes on stream.

My G5 is connecting using it's built in modem and the 'Server' setup for internet sharing is obvious, aparently, but what is the setup for my wife's laptop?

We are networked through a simple router.

I have tried setting the G5 as the router but that doesn't work.
I have tried setting the router as the router but that doesn't work either.

What's the secret please ? :-)

Simon

The router should be running at this point as a simple switch. Both the G5 and the lap top should be plugged into the router's LAN ports; the only thing that EVER gets plugged into the WAN port is your BB modem. Turn off DHCP on the router and make sure it's on on your G5; at this point your G5 is supposed to be doing everything for your wife's laptop, including providing an IP, DNS addresses, etc.

Make sure you have Internet Sharing set up to share through the built in ethernet port, too.

ghporter,

Thanks for your reply.

How do I switch on DHCP on the G5?

It should be part of the Internet Sharing setup, probably called "distribute IP addresses" or something like that. I don't have a Mac with me right now to paw through the menus to be more specific.

ghporter,

I don't know if I'm just being dim but I can't see any such option...

Actually it should use DHCP automatically... I was thinking of something else.

Did you disable your OS X firewall? That could be a big issue, too.

ghporter,

I didn't disable the firewall but I did check for any obvious blocks.

Our second line has now been installed so we don't have to share the line but it's a shame such a useful feature isn't more easy to use.

Thanks for your help!

I'm sorry too. It should "just work," but as with many other issues, if it gets complicatd, then "just work" becomes less likely.
