I'm trying to connect to a Windows XP client at the office from my home Mac. I'm using our company's RDC web page but when I try to connect to the client I get an error that says:

"This portion of the Remote Web Workplace requires the Microsoft Remote Desktop ActiveX Control. Your browser's security settings may be preventing you from downloading ActiveX controls. Adjust these settings, and try to connect again."

I've tried IE, Safari and Opera and played around with the settings but to no avail. I am able to connect this way using my Windows laptop from my home - same network settings so this must be Mac specific. I've also tried to use MS's RDC client but it won't work either. Any ideas?

None of the Mac Browsers (I.E., Safari, Opera, etc.) support Microsoft ActiveX. ActiveX is only supported in Windows IE version 5.5 or higher I believe.

Your companies web page may be set up to only use Microsofts Remote Web Client and not allow the use of the RDC client, in which case you may be out of luck.

Bit.shftr is right. You won't be able to connect from a Mac using the RDC web access because there is no Mac ActiveX client.

You could connect using the Mac RDC client, but only if you can convince your network administrator to forward the proper ports from the office firewall to the particular WinXP client you want to connect to. Unless you are holding his first born at gunpoint, that doesn't seem likely.

I have the exact same problem at home, which I resolved by using an old discarded PC (running Win98SE) for my RDC connection. I use a Belkin KVM switch so that I can share my Mac's keyboard, monitor and mouse with the PC. I have networked the two computers so that it is easy to move files from one to the other.
