Hey everyone,

I have been searching for some information and realized that the people on a forum like this would know far more in real world scenerios.

So here it goes, I'm trying to get as much information on ICS as possible. I cant get my network device to grab a dhcp address and so I am trying to learn all I can, So shoot me with all of your ICS best and lets see who knows their **** more just a little friendly competition.

I'm running 10.4 tiger and trying to understand how its crazy ics can actually work and where the dhcp and nating come into play, and how to tell if they are actually running? bla

Thanks for the info and help you guys (and gals) you dont know how much it means to me.

Thanks Again,
Nick

What exactly is it you are trying to do? Why are you trying to use ICS instead of a router?

In this particular configuration, I need to connect wirelessly to the router, and share the wired connection to a device that needs to pick up a DHCP addy instead of a AutoIP addy.

I just barly got it working by enabling just about all the services, then resetting the device.

What I am trying to accomblish is information on how MAC ICS works. I noticed it pulled up a dhcp server, but am only able to view it in one place. So does it need a private ip from its own DHCP server in order to NAT across to the internet connection?

More info to fuel the fire the better

I always considered ICS a good exercise for masochists.

If you don't mind spending a little money, you might find a LinkSys WET54GS might solve your problem more easily:

or if you don't need 4 ports and 802.11g capability, the cheaper WET11

ya haha, unfortunetly i need to get this working as is. Unless you know of a way to place a router in line to the device. Wireless-ics - router- device

Basically I need my device to gain access to the internet through ICS on Mac 10.4. The device is assigning itself an AutoIP, how do I get the MAC to NAT that address?

First off... ICS is not a good acronym to just use. It took me some time to figure out that you mean internet connection sharing. Spell it out at least once.

Secondly, both Windows and Apple's versions simply turn on a DHCP server on the port, and then NAT-route. There is nothing more to it than that. If you want pass-though routing, then you need to write the routing tables yourself.

If you get a WET11 or WET54G, you don't need a second router. Your ethernet device, whatever it is will connect directly to your existing wireless network without having to go through your G4.

The WETs are like universal wireless cards that you can connect anything to using an ethernet cable.

Do you know of a way to alter the DHCP table? I found some good information at:http://jonx.com/blog/84/notes-on-os-...ternet-sharing
The device that I am using will send a request for a dhcp and if cannot uptain an IP will switch to an AutoIP address and when it does that, NAT will not bring it across to gain internet access.

Can you set your device to a fixed IP address?

Mav, a bit more detail might help here. What is your "device" specifically? All the data you've provided is extremely vague, so it's hard to provide more specific ideas.

I guess the reason its so vague is I'm just looking for more information on the way MAC handles ICS but I've found a bit of info on it now. Here is what I am trying to do.

I have a Sonos Zone Player that needs to get out to the internet for updates, internet radio, ect. I have my internet connection through wireless to my land lord up stairs. I am connecting the ZP (zone player) to my ethernet port and trying to get the MAC to share the connection.

The ZP will pull a DHCP address on power cycle but if it cannot complete its request it will assign an AutoIP which it is doing. I am trying to find a way to either NAT that AutoIP or possibly figure out why its not recieving a DHCP when if I connect a laptop, I am able to release and renew the IP just fine.

Hope that makes things less vague.

Thanks for the time guys,
Nick

By the way, you are not alone in having problems with the Mac ICS DHCP server:

Thanks for the link John, what about doing something like this:
natd -dynamic -interface en1
ipfw -f flush
ipfw add divert natd all from any to any via en1
ipfw add pass all from any to any
Where"en1" is the airport adapter

I found this on the forums but have yet to try it out.
