I have just changed to using PPoE in the network pref pane - everything is set to automatic and works fine. BUT, somehow my macs name is changed too. Despite being set in the sharing panel, it changes to P85.xxx.yyy.zzz (whatever the dynamic IP address is) whenever I connect to the ISP! Can I stop this form happening? Its a 10.4.1 system.

FWIW, it's behaving correctly: when connected, the Mac gets its IP address, and then does a reverse lookup on it to see if there is a hostname associated with that address. If there is, it uses it.
The easiest solution (and one that I would recommend for other reasons as well) is to ditch PPPoE on the Mac, and get a small router device. It will then do the PPPoE itself, and the Mac will not grab a hostname.

Thanks tooki -
mmm, I just took the router away because it wouldn't work with iChat 3!

What router, and what was the issue? There are TONS of different brands and models out there, and most are both inexpensive and easy to manage. I'm certain that there's an alternative to getting rid of the router, either some configuration that makes iChat work for you, or a new firmware or model that will work.

D-Link DSL-G664T (Germany specific). D-Link have never released a firmware update for it, despite some issues. It worked fine in Panther, but with Tiger I could never get video in iChat 3 to work. I would always get I did not respond errors, even with the Mac's IP set as a DMZ, the right ports allowed, and UPnP enabled. Other people seemed to be having similar problems with iChat too - I took the router away, set the Mac to PPoE, and iChat works like a charm, video first time every time.

Well, I found it. Edit /private/etc/hostconfig
Comment out (with a pound):
# HOSTNAME=-AUTOMATIC-
and add hostname=whatever:
HOSTNAME=MacG5
I'm not sure how smart it is to edit the hostconfig file, but at least it stops my Macs hostname changing whenever I (re)connect to the internet.

Host files are fair game-but being careful is always smart.
I never thought of a host problem in your situation-primarily because I was looking at it from the other direction, as in the computer interacting with the router, rather than the other way around. And I still haven't gotten my head around this problem...
