My modem slows down every few days or so. This seems to be a problem with the Qwest modems in general. My brother has the same modem (Actiontec wg-701) and his does the same thing. A simple restart of the modem will fix the speed temporarily. Is there any way to automate this? Maybe a power strip that could shut down for a few minutes every night. Any thoughts.

When a certain brand of router with one patricular version of its firmware exhibited similar behavior, a lot of people came up with a variety of interesting ways to deal with it. The best one I saw involved both a power strip and a timer switch.

The idea is to plug the timer into the wall set to turn off for 15 minutes at some point in the day that the user would not be online, and then plug whatever other networking equipment you may have into the power strip, ensuring it all comes on at about the same time. If you don't need "instant" online access 24/7, you could just plug all of the equipment into a power strip and turn the strip off when you went to bed...

I think my best solution is just to get cable. I've seen power strips that can be hooked up to a network that run a simple web server for remote control, but those are way too expensive for what I need. Oh well, guess I'll have to deal with it until I feel like spending the cash for cable.

DSL users have similar problems. It all depends on what hardware you have, and the firmware running on it. How those two things interact with your network are critical to how well things will go for you. That said, I have never heard of Actiontec's DSL or cable modems, so I have no idea whether or not the problem you're having is typical.
