hi.

i am trying to network 2 G4s running 10.3.9. How do I do this? Both g4s are connected to the internet via the same hub (not wireless) and I have both IP addresses. Does AppleTalk need to be turned on? I know a bunch about computers but when it comes to networking I'm helpless. I'd like to accomplish 2 things:

1. Easy file sharing
2. I have a Canon i9900 connected to one of the G4s and I'd like the other cpu to be able to print to it easily.

Thanks! it would be great if I could get this up and running within a few hours to impress the missus when she gets home from work. Thanks! (twice)

OK. so far I sort of have file sharing working, except when I go to the Go -> Connect to Server menu and connect using the address afp://(other cpu's IP) it asks for a password. is this the password that you'd have as a User? my own password for my computer doesn't work, niether does the other computer's password. there aren't multiple users on either computer. we can share files by using each other's drop box which is OK but not ideal. Still can't get printer to work. I downloaded the canon drivers from the website (the software that came with the printer is in the attic) on the other computer but it won't see it, probably since it's not plugged in. thanks for any advice.

Simple steps:
System Preferences -> Sharing -> Services. Turn on 'Personal File Sharing' on both machines and Printer Sharing on the machine that has the printer attached.
When you log in to another computer in the manner you described, you MUST use a username and password that is valid on the machine that you are logging in to. By default, it will try to log in under the connecting machine's user name which will not work if that username doesn't exist on the host machine.
In other words, if you want complete file sharing and access to all of one another files, she will have to know both your username and password and LOG IN AS YOU to see folders outside the Public/Drop Box stuff. Understand ?? The security of the OS only allows guest users to see the Public folder. To see everything, you'll have to log in to her machine AS HER.

Print sharing is pretty easy too but you have to go through the right steps. On the machine that DOESN'T have the printer physically attached: Open /Applicatiions/Uitilties/ Printer Setup Utility. Click on the 'Add Printer' button. Choose 'IP Printing' from the top dropdown. Choose LPD/LPR from the next. Supply the local IP address of the machine that has the printer attached to it. Leave queue name blank. Once the printer is added to the printer's list, check the check box to the left of the newly added printer (In Menu) which will insure that it is one of your printing choices.

I can assure you, both of these functions work just fine between two macs. I use them both every day.

I'm not completely sure of your setup, but you may have to manually set the document size in the "Page Setup" section of the actual document you are working in. When you go to print, it usually doesn't give paper size options at that point (at least on the canon printer I'm using).
