My router keeps losing my internet connection. I am using Comcast and a new Linksys router. I also have Nuvio VOIP which is great but rebooting the router daily is getting to be a pain since you can get a phone call and not know it. Is there a setting I missed in the router config that would stop this from happening. Once I reboot the router it comes right back but still it should not be happening daily.

Thanks

See the big thread a bit further down. You're far from the first person with this type of problem.

Try updating the router firmware.

Also check with Comcast to see if they're having "issues" in your area. More often than not, they'll say "Oh, no, it's not us!" but asking them lets them know you're paying attention-and sometimes it IS them.

I downloaded the updated firmware. Should I just use my PC to flash it? I downloaded it to my Mac but I don't know what to do. The Mac is hardwired to the router and the PC uses wireless.

Thanks

Your router should let you do it through its browser interface. Unfortunately Linksys puts this option in different places for different models, so I can't point you straight to it, but it is there. Look in the Advanced options. Once you find it, all you'll have to do is point the browser interface to the file you downloaded.

But you might have to expand the downloaded file with Stuffit Expander first. Often the downloaded files are actually compressed folders and the .bin file you need to update the firmware is inside the folder.

John has an excellent point. Linksys does "zip" a lot of their files for faster downloads. Stuffit "unzips" files just fine.

This is one area where Windows makes things easier on users-their file browser automatically reads zip archives and allows the user to expand the contents. That's a hint, Apple!

I think the file I downloaded ends in .bin...I am not home to check. Stuffit cannot do anything with it. Is it already good to go?

If dragging and dropping the downloaded file onto Stuffit Expander doesn't do anything, then you are probably ready to go.

Your alternative is to download the file to your PC, then temporarily take the LinkSys to the PC, connect it by ethernet to the PC and run the update on the PC. (Obviously, the LinkSys does not have to be connected to your cable modem while you do the update and it is probably easier to move the LinkSys to the PC than vice versa).

By the way, make sure you make a note of your LinkSys settings before updating the firmware as doing so might possibly reset the LinkSys to the factory default settings.

Now I need to find the password. My friend set up the router for me and forgot the password to get in the Admin acct! But the internet has been fine for 2 days now so maybe I am ok anyway.

Unless your friend changed things, leave the username blank. The password is "admin".

You can check by going to http://192.168.1.1

If you friend changed the password, you can restore the router to factory defaults by sticking a pen into the reset hole and holding it for 10 seconds.
