I am trying to connect to a win server over afp and everytime i try to connect it says wrong username/password or something like that but doesnt even give me a chance to enter my username and password. I am able to reach the login screen over smb and connect and I am able to connect over afp from another account on the machine. I tried trashing user prefs and repairing permissions but nothing works. I also looked into my keychains and there are no entries for the server.

I will most likely just create a new account so I can connect over afp but im really curious as to why i cant reach the login window. Is it storing an old u/p somewhere?

In general what you need to use is Samba to connect to a Windows server. Samba is built into OS X. Try the help system...

AFP is set on the server and all other users are using it. The problem with smb is that unfortunately not all files have extensions and when connected via smb these extensionless files all appear as unix executable files to the finder.

Right now when i try to connect via afp like everyone else i dont get a login window it just says incorrect username/password try again.
