I am a long-time Mac user but don't know anything about setting up a network.

I have recently acquired a G5 which is hooked up to an Actiontec Modem GT-701-WG (my DSL connection) with built-in router and card so you supposedly don't need any additional equipment to set up a network. I am attempting to set up a wireless network between this computer and my other computer which is an older iMac with an Airport card installed so that I can access the Internet and share files from another part of my home. They are both running on OS 10.3.5.

I have been researching this for days and maybe I'm a little dense in this area but I just end up getting more confused. Can someone explain to me in simple terms how to do this? I would be most grateful for some help before my brain explodes trying to figure this out myself!

I've tried so many things I'm not sure anymore--mostly fooling with settings in the Network preferences on both computers and the settings on the modem to make sure it was set up for wireless. Apparently, what I need is to start from scratch on how to go about actually setting up the network, step by step. Also, because I don't have a router or base of some kind, since it's supposedly built into the modem, a lot of the things I read don't seem to apply.

Well, they actually do apply, the router is built into your DSL modem but that doesn't mean its not there. Can you access the router home page in the modem? That is the one uniform thing that you have to be able to access from the start.

Is your wired machine getting an IP address and connecting?... I'm assuming that it does, you're posting here. Can you access the DSL modem/router home page? Get the Router number from the TCP/IP panel of the Network pane, and try typing that into your browser (might have to use IE for that, sometimes internal webpages in PC-centric equipment isn't Safari friendly)...
