solved problem. I couldn't send mail out using Mail.
According to Apple suppport:
"Mac accounts: If your ISP is blocking port 25, you can change the port to 587 and try again. Choose Mail > Preferences, and click Accounts. Select your .Mac account, then click Account Information. Click the Server Settings button, then replace 25 with 587 in the “Server port” field. Click OK and close the Preferences window. Try sending your message again."
worked.

Ha! I was having this problem all over also, some places my mail worked sending, others no. I figured my iBook was crazy. I'm glad I randomly found this thread! Will it make any difference if I leave the port on 587 all the time? Or should I switch it back to 25 when I am home where it works?

hey CIA
I'm really not sure. I'm just going to leave it on 587 and see how it goes. I've only been using it on this network lately, so haven't tried elsewhere.

It depends on your ISP-mine, SBC, does block port 25 for non-SBC outgoing mail, so it's important to use some other port if I'm sending mail through my school account.
Having 587 open shouldn't hurt, but if it doesn't help, I'd close it back.
