The internet is the same on Macs and I struggle to see where people get these assumptions that Macs have limited internet capabilities etc.
BT/NTL/Tiscali will work fine, it's all the same.
You can share your existing internet connection via a wireless router so you could sit on your sofa and browse the internet.
You can sign up to .Mac as a trial but to subscribe it's not really worth it in my opinion, it's only e-mail, website and online storage - no actual internet connection is provided.
Just for your information - Internet/Networking questions belong in the networking forum, please read the forum headers first and then decide where to post your question.

I concur with seanc, and I'm moving this thread to Networking where you'll get better (and more) responses.

Sean is correct.
.Mac is service provided by Apple as an online solution for e-mail, website usage, and backing up your computer's data in the event of a crash.
You can use any internet service you want - Verizon Broadband, Time Warner Cable's Roadrunner, SBC Yahoo! (like I do), Earthlink.. anything. In actuality, setting up an internet connection on a Mac is much easier (in my opinion) than on a PC. In fact, I didn't have to use the "installation" CD that SBC Yahoo! gave me in the first place.
Of course, you can always go wireless - and even if your main computer that is connected via ethernet or usb to a modem is a PC, you can still easily configure a Mac to work with your network.
