I've been printing from my iBook with 10.x to my Windows desktop for ages (HP Laserjet 4l). After upgrading to Tiger (reformatted hard disk), I cannot seem to get OSX to "see" my Windows box for printing. I can mount drives via Go->Connect to Server and typing in the address like this:
smb://hostname
or
smb://ip_address
But there is no such option in the Print Utility (Chooser?). Only "Workgroup" shows up in the browse list. My Windows 2000 box is part of the Mordor workgroup, and Tiger just can't seem to find it on the network.
Is there a way to either make my desktop visible, or to put a URL into the Chooser?

Click on "More Printers..." and all should be clear.

That's where I am. I have "Windows Printing" selected on the top select box. It doesn't matter if I select "Workgroup" or "Network Neighborhood" in the bottom box, only my iBook shows up in the "Name, Comment" area. Isn't there a way to specify the address?
The desktop is on my wired LAN, and the iBook is on the wireless LAN (which should be bridged, but...). They can ping eachother, and I can mount win2k fileshares just fine by specifying the URL, so I know everything is working at a layer-3 level.

I can even see the share with smbclient:
Code:
$ smbclient -U Administrator -L incognito
Password:
Domain=[INCOGNITO] OS=[Windows 5.0] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]
Sharename Type Comment
--------- ---- -------
IPC$ IPC Remote IPC
print$ Disk Printer Drivers
Z$ Disk Default share
M$ Disk Default share
HPLJ4A Printer HPLJ4A
ADMIN$ Disk Remote Admin
Main Disk
C$ Disk Default share
Domain=[INCOGNITO] OS=[Windows 5.0] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]
edit: I guess you can't make the code tag honor spaces. :-)

Finally figured it out: http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/sh...;Number=691131
It seems there is Yet Another Secret Key that one must hold down in order to get the old behavior back. I'll copy the steps here for posterity:
Code:
1. Open "Printer Utility."
2. Click the "Add" printer button.
3. Hold down "Option" and click the "More Printers" button (be persistent--a single click does not always work for me).
4. On way or another choose "Advanced."
5. You should see a line that says "Windows Printer Via Samba.” Choose this line.
6. Enter the name of the printer attached to your Windows machine as seen on your iBook. (I am not positive that you have to use exactly this name, but, as above, doing so won't hurt.)
7. Find your printer in the list of supported printers (e.g., Epson Photo Stylus 780), and choose it.
8. Find the line that says "smb://".
9. Complete this line as follows if your Windows machine has a specific user name and password that you want to use in printing (in everything that follows use // not \\).
smb:\\username:password@workgroup printer is on/name of computer printer is on/name of shared printer.
Be sure the printer is shared on the Windows machine.
The final form of the line would be something like:
smb: \\John:secretpassword@Ournetwork/XP2/Printer2
9. If there is no user name/password, as in my case (i.e., the only "User" name on my XP machine is the administrator's name--"Owner"), then complete the line mentioned above something like:
smb:\\Owner name@Ournetwork/XP5/Printer2.
In my case, the completed line essentially was:
smb:\\Owner@home/XP2345/Printer2.

Is your XP box running Home or Pro? On mine (XP Pro), I just had to share the printer, then add it on my Mac as usual without any extra steps as you described.
