have large size files to transfer over from powerbook 10.3 to powermac 10.4. both have airport extreme and are connected to interenet with airport express.what is the fastest wireless way to transfer files.
have tried appletalk and starting file sharing in the preferences and then searching for computer from go etc... the process is slow. transferring a gig might take half hour.
is there a way to transfer the files wirelessly directly from computer to computer bypassing my airport extreme and not using the internet?
many thanks

AppleTalk over ethernet is slow; it's a layer of data transfer protocol on top of another data transfer protocol (ethernet) so there's a lot of overhead. Using ethernet alone should be faster. And just connecting the two computers via wired ethernet should be a lot faster; in my experience, wireless is optimized more for smaller transfers, so transferring a bunch of MP3s for example will seem a lot faster than transferring one movie.
You can also use Target Disk Mode to move files from one to the other. Read the Apple help for how to do that-I'm not up on it at all.

thanks for the super prompt reply
the only reason am doing it wirelessly is i dont have a cross over cable or firewire cable at home and kinda need to do the transfer thing immediately. target disk mode is real fast and my preferred method of transfer. have tried transferring without apple talk and it is faster.
thanks again

You probably don't need a crossover cable because of the auto-sensing Ethernet jack on your Power Mac and probably your PowerBook. Try it out and it should work just the same as crossover cable.
