my apologies if this topic has been fully dealt with elsewhere in the forums and i'm contributing to bloat. my searching hasn't found the answer i'm looking for.
i have a friend who's running 10.3.x (not sure of the exact update status) on a 2003, tray loading optical drive iBook. she's living in an off capmus house where everyone chips in for a cable connection and accesses the network via a Linksys wireless router. she and i have been searching diligently for a hardware solution that will allow her to access this network that doesn't require shelling out $125+ for a non-extreme airport card. the major caveat here is that i've seen recommendations for both d-link and linksys brand USB wireless adapters which either require significant tinkering with the nuts and bolts underpinnings of OSX, are unreliable, or are prone to causing the occasional kernel panic. she's looking for something that's not going to cause her an unwanted aneurysm if she's trying to do research or submit a paper via e-mail and suddenly has to cope with major system software problems.
so the quesiton, in a nutshell -- is there any reliable, supported USB or firewire powered wireless solution she could purchase that will save her the cost of having to purchase an original generation airport card? it sounds from a few other posts as though there are some 3rd party software/driver options -- are they reliable? are they costly? could this post *be* more verbose?
any help appreciated.
