I've got a router specifically the linksys befw11s4 v. 4 and I'm trying to connect to using either ethernet or airport and neither will work, all my other comps do (mac & pc) but not this damn powerbook, in nework status it says that it can't acquire an ip address and thus i can't get online nor access the router, but I can ping it, what is up w/ this?

will it work if you manually set the configuration? you can ping it from another machine, does that mean that it is getting a dhcp address?
it might just be the DNS that's messed, but it's hard to tell from what you've told us.
what are the specs on the powerbook?
can you see the powerbook from another computer on the network?

If the machine reports it can't acquire an IP address that means that it is NOT getting a DHCP address. Ping works? That's interesting; it shouldn't.
Indigoimac, how is your PB's networking configured? Let's start with ethernet; getting you some connection will probably lead us to getting it all working. And what about the wireless router's configuration? Please share what your setup is.

I could not ping the laptop but i could ping the router from the laptop, then after forgetting about this thread I configured it manually and now I can get an ip address and I can access the router and I would imagine other comps on the network, BUT I still can't get online. I'm not quite sure what you want me to describe in how it's confgured? The router is connected to the dsl modem and 2 windows comps are directly connnected to the router, then a switch is connected to a single cable upstairs to which an ibook an imac this powerbook and a pc are attached, all but the powerbook have complete access. The router has DHCP on and distributes addresses to everything else just fine. I think DNS might have something to do w/ this but I'm not very familiar w/ it.
Thanks guys!
It is a powerbook g4 15" 1.5GHz, 1gig ram, gigabit ethernet, blutooth, airport, superdrive, etc.

Is your PB set up to make the DSL connection through PPPoE? That could easily kill any chance of a connection through your router. Set the PB up to connect to your LAN (basically just enable DHCP/automatic addresses on the PowerBook and undo anything that says it's connecting to a DSL modem), and it 'should' work.
By the way, with DHCP working properly, all the other settings you need, like gateway and DNS servers, will be supplied automatically. This is one of the great things about leaving things set for DHCP.

This comp was never set to connect to dsl w/o a router and if I turn dhcp on it doesn't find the router or get an ip and then if it is in manual and it's pointed to the router, it can access local network resources (printer, other comps, and router config) but no internet, is there something that could be blocking ethernet/airport from accessing the internet?

Well I entered in the DNS addresses in manual mode and that seems to have worked, but I would like to know why DHCP doesn't work.

Has this PB worked online anywhere?

It has been online using airport and dial-up, before I wiped it a while ago it had been on an ethernet network, anyway all seems to be going well!

When you wiped it, did you reinstall everything? (Grasping at straws here...)
Also, I'd just delete ALL my network locations and start fresh. Maybe there's a location setting in there that's messing things up. (More straws...)

Yep did a complete reinstall, all the locations were deleted I've been running in "Automatic" I am however suspicious of something, when I reinstalled I used the OSX migration tool for the 1st time from an iBook G3 and I moved the network settings over that way, I don't know if something got "lost in translation" between G4, G3 or 10/100 and gigabit, I just don't know! All I have to say is that it works great when it is set-up in manual and that's good enough until I upgrade it to tiger, which mighter happen sooner tan I had originally planned!
