Opps, somehow my Safari had a meltdown when I tried to post this. Anyway, solved the problem.
Had a very slow PB15 on Airport (graphite base station) network that was getting crummy download speed off cable modem. Picked up Airport Express (cheaper return from Apple store)
and walla! Extreme Airport Rocks!
Thanks for looking anyway.

The Graphite Base Station is limited to the 802.11B standard, which maxes out at 11mbps (that's megaBITS per second), while the Express meets the 802.11G standard of up to 54mbps. Much faster, no?
