I have a win 2k laptp that I'm using as a fileserver on a wireless network (WEP) in our house. It is running iTunes, and has an enormous external drive that is currently working well with iTunes on my OSX PB and my wifes WIN XP - we can both play music on iTunes that is living on the old 2k laptop in the basement.

I am trying to set it up to share files too, but can't figure it out. I have the firewall turned off, and can ping it from the PB, but when I use finder to try to log on, it rejects my logon. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Peeb

Do you already have a folder on the Win2K machine shared? If you can ping the thing's IP, then you're not having an issue with wireless networking, but rather with file access.

you need to research if 2k will have sharing for mac, you might need to get a program named DAVE. i know that xp has mac networking protocals nativly.. back in the day when win 98 was the OS that everyone used, if you wanted to network mac-pc you had to get dave and install it on the mac i belive, i think it installed netbios on the mac so the mac's can talk to pc's.. just one more idea.

Samba should be able to share with any 2K or XP share; Dave, while helpful in a number of situations, shouldn't be needed here.

I do have folders shared on the win2k machine, and it seems that, when I try to connect to the win2k machine, it connects, but rejects the password. I'm pretty sure it's the right password, because I just set it up on the win2k machine...
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Peeb

What form are you entering the password in? It may be an issue with needing "username@computer" or "username@\\computer\share."

I'm just entering the password - there are three boxes on the dialogue - Domain, username (or something) and password.
If it should be in a different format, then that could be my problem....

Do you actually have a domain set up? A domain requires a domain controller which generally authenticates users-and if you do NOT actually have one set up, this is probably your problem. You most likely need to have everything set up on a workgroup, not a domain.

That's possible - I don't know the difference. Could you point me to somewhere that can help? Appreciate your patience on this one!

In Windows XP (I don't have 2K running right now) right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties." One of the tabs at the top of the pane is "Computer Name;" click it. The resulting pane will show the current domain or workgroup and tell you which it is. There's also a button to change workgroup or domain name. 2K should be similar to this. Check your wife's XP laptop's settings first; I'll bet you are in a workgroup and you need to tell your new computer what that is-and the server that it's not in a domain. Depending on your server software (or lack of server software) that may be simple or difficult to change.

Let me know what you find.

EDIT: New information. Look at this thread. It may be your problem as well. Unfortunately I don't have an answer.
