What exactly happens when you turn on interface robustness????

I've wondered this, too. The only thing I've ever seen it do is remove marginal networks from the menu.

I would guess that the signal strength gets stronger but the distance decreases between you and your router. I keep it turned on for some reason. Try googling it to see what it actually does.

Isn't it "interference robustness?" Anyway, all it seems to do is raise the minimum acceptable signal level/quality for connecting to a particular network; that allows the AirPort card to ignore interfering signals. As tooki points out, this should remove more marginal networks from the list of those available.

And I doubt it changes power levels; it's looking at how well the card can see a network, not how well the card can power through interfering signals. That wouldn't help the client see network traffic at all.

Yes, it is indeed "interference robustness". I didn't even notice the mistake.
