hi all,
i just finished moving (what a hassle) and finally got the cable lines and internet up and running via a cable modem and airport express... now this might seem petty, but at my old place, when i woke my powerbook up from sleep it was already connected and fired up ready to go... where as now, it seems to take about 5-10 seconds while it searches for the network; if i attempt to refresh a page or go to a new one, i get that "you aren't connected to the internet" message...
i've checked out the system preferences; network; airport settings; by default join preferred network; and have deleted all other networks but my own...but w/ the same results..
is there a way to specify this network and alway have it connected?
thx in advance...

You cannot have the PB "always" connected and put it to sleep. When it's asleep, it's off for all intents and purposes, and so is the AirPort card inside it. 5-10 seconds is pretty fast; it takes my wife's iBook as much as 30 seconds to reconnect when she wakes it up.

The "I'm not connected after waking my Mac" issue has been around for a while. Some people experience it after installing an AirPort update, while others have it go away when the same update is installed (at least apparently). If you have recently (in the process of your move, for example) installed a software update, that could easily have changed the way your PB's card reacts.

Finally, think of it this way: at least it's automatically reconnecting. Some people must manually disconnect and then reconnect when this happens to them.

I can't believe this: my powerbook reconnects automatically in not more than 3-5 seconds. However, I have experienced "decays" in the signal strenght if my APX has the same channel (mine is on automatic) than the other hotspots in the vicinity.

Y no entienden nada... ¡y cómo se divierten!...

Here's something that is sort of related, and has always puzzled me: My MacBookPro (and, indeed, my trusty G4 1.25 GHz 15" Powerbook before it) always connects automatically immediately -- and I mean within 1-2 seconds -- to my home network but can often take up to 20 seconds to recognise, select and lock on to one of the numerous networks I have access privileges to during the course of a normal working week. All networks concerned have security of some kind, from MAC filtering and hidden SSIDs, to basic WEP and so forth. So, any idea on why my laptop seems to "know" it has returned to base camp, and therefore hops on so fast? It doesn't bother me in the least having to wait a little while to connect in the other locations but I'd love to know why this happens! Anyone?
