Hi everybody,

I just purchased a Linksys WRT54GC but am too cheap to buy the accessory antenna. I have an old antenna from my US Robotics Wireless Router which the Linksys router replaced. The antenna seems to fit well with the Linksys. Just wondering if anyone else has done something similar or if it is contraindicated in anyway? I'd hate to give myself cancer with excess radio waves or something.

Thanks!

Do the connector on the antenna and the connector on the Linksys box match? Linksys' larger boxes use a TNC-R connector, which has the center connector reversed; the antenna end has the female pin rather than a male pin. It's possible that the USR box uses a standard connector, and your antenna won't really be connected...

You're NOT going to get "excess radio waves" from this device. It produces less than one watt of RF power, GUARANTEED. The biggest issues you may face are poor performance (see above) and the (slight) potential that a bad antenna would cause the device to eventually fail.

Thanks for the quick reply ghporter. As far as I can tell, the antenna and the router match well. The threads of the antenna fit tightly with the Linksys. Regarding female/maleness, the Linksys has a little pin on its end and the USR antenna has a little hole for it.

My performance isn't hindered at all so I guess it works...

Thanks again!

I think you do have the connectors working with you. Other than the fact that they may not match stylistically, you should have no problem.
