I got a G5 about 6 mo. ago and put my G4 in the closet. Just got another desk and a wired router, set up the G4 (10.1.5), it's working fine but it can't connect to the internet by ethernet DSL, the same method that it worked fine with before I disconnected it (haven't tried another method). I first tried it thru the router (G5 connects fine), then directly thru the modem, but it didn't work. Couldn't reproduce it just now, but yesterday something i tried gave me an error msg saying there was no dial tone. I have location set to automatic, TCP/IP using DHCP, proxies in passive FTP mode.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the MacNN Forums!

And your problem is pretty simple: you have two different machines trying to establish a PPPoE connection through your DSL modem. One box (the router, maybe?) is trying to connect, which allows your G5 to go online. The other box (probably the G4) is trying to establish a connection, but it doesn't need to so you have problems.

The BEST way to share is to configure the router to establish the connection (typically this is done by accessing the router's configuration pages, telling it you're using DSL, and providing your username and password), then configuring ALL the computers to simply use a LAN for everything.

Go into the G4's (the computer that is having the problem) Network Preferences, select the built in ethernet adapter, and tell it to use DHCP. That should do most of the fixing. See if it will connect now.

It's set for DHCP- at the moment it won't connect by itself even when I plug it directly into the modem and disconnect the G5.

Tried swapping the ethernet cable you used with the G4 yet to see if it's bad?
