Hi,
My airport is being used by someone to dL and ul a big amount of data every day. It's been going for a few month. I only noticed it when I received my ISP's bill for this month. Since my dl quota was over the limit, I got billed an extra $30. I got a credit this time only so I must solve this. I dl'ed "little snitch" but it only checks the Mac pc and not the airport base station. Is there a way to supervise the airports activity, trace the hacker and report him. i had WPA on it, now put WPA2 and changed pwd but he still had access. I had to put the HS modem on Standby. I also unpluged the ethernet cable to get a new IP address. I need help quick.
Thx

Ok.....
If you're really having problems you'll need to tell us:
How you can tell
What kind of connection you have to the Internet
What kind of hardware you have (modem, router, AirPort, computer, etc.)
Can't help if we don't know anything-

Yea, what ghporter said. Once you provide the information, then you should consider re-seting the airport and setting up a WEP/WPA security protocol, block the broadcast of your SSID, and probably filter the MAC address.

Using WPA should almost guarantee your AirPort base is proof against anyone getting in without permission (assuming you use a good passphrase -i.e. quite long and complex without any dictionary words in it). Since you already were using WPA and are still using it, I recommend something sort of drastic: resetting your base station to factory settings and then configuring it again from scratch, INCLUDING SETTING A NEW ADMIN PASSWORD FOR THE BASE STATION. If someone was getting in despite your use of WPA, he may have compromised the base station itself, so starting fresh should help.
Are you SURE there isn't anything on your Mac (running in the background, maybe) that's pulling down a lot of data-or PUSHING data? Like ANY torrent client? Unless you explicitly turn off most clients, they continue to share your downloads with other clients, and that can rack up a lot of traffic.
I have yet to find a definitive call on whether or not the AirPort base stations do MAC address filtering, but that would help keep intruders out too. And as has been pointed out, turning off SSID broadcast is useless as a security measure and it sometimes makes it harder for your wireless computer to connect when it's woken up.

Anyone know about CamXav? Its a free anti-virus program praised by many Mac magazines. Could it be a trojan or have a flaw and open a port that someone could exploit. My excessive dl/ul problem seems to correspond with when I installed it. For testing I removed it and the airport "wireless activity led" stopped being almost always on. I reinstalld it and it started again so once more I deinstalled it. I reset the airport and reconfig'ed it with WPA2.
Do you know where I can get a discount coupon code to buy little snitch?
And what a-v program do you suggest for my use?
Thx

ClamXav is a fine program. I don't know when it would take up bandwidth, maybe downloading virus definition updates or something? Even so, I can't think of anything that would use such excessive amounts of bandwidth that it would put you over your monthly limit.
Do this: open Activity Monitor and select the Network tab to see what amounts of data are being sent and received. If it's a lot, and you don't have any applications open that should be using your connection, then you'll know if it's your Mac or not.
