need help setting up airport extreme base station/connecting to internets

My G4 powerbook with airport extreme card connects to the extreme base, the base is connected to the DSL modem but I cannot get onto the internet. I'm obviously on right now but via the ethernet cable. I've tried all of the set up assists and configurations and I think I've only manage to twist the whole thing into a knot.
