Hi guys,

My mother is dropping off her 233mhz iMac for me to clean up. I'm going to wipe the hard drive and do a clean install of OS 9 for her. I'd like to save what's on the hard drive first, but she has no CD burner. Will it work if I try to network her computer with my Dual 2.0 G5? Anything special I have to do besides hook them up with a cable and enable file sharing on her iMac? Any pointers would be great, thanks!

What OS is the old iMac running? It should be VERY easy to move files from it in a number of ways. One of the easiest is to connect it in Target Disk mode, effectively making the iMac a very fancy external drive for your G5. You could also connect it to your network if you have one, but that would be a bit more complex.

If you intend to do file sharing using AFP, make sure they connect over TCP/IP. Mac OS 10.4 dropped support for AFP over AppleTalk.

The method suggested by ghporter ought to be faster and simpler, though.
