Hi all,

I'm looking for some answers re: how to connect two macs over the internet.

I would like to do three things:

1) I have a friend in town, and we would like to share files. We're looking at about 80 gigs going both ways.

2) My parents live out of town, and I would like to give them access to my iPhoto pics and imovie videos so they can always be up to date on their granddaughter.

3) When I go out of town, I'd like to have access to all of the files on my computer.

A little background -- I have a 20" imac G5. I have DSL behind a 2wire DSL modem which I'm fairly sure is also a router, since I have 3 computers hooked up to it (my imac and ibook wirelessly, and my PC with an ethernet cable). My friend has an imac G5. My parents have an ibook. When I go out of town, I take the ibook (obviously).

I've spent the entire morning searching various forums on how to accomplish these goals, and I think I'm actually more confused now than I was before.

Do I need to use webdav, ftp, ssh, sftp? I don't really know what any of this stuff is. I keep seeing references to changing things in the terminal. I've never used the terminal, and quite frankly it scares me a little bit.

What's the best way to do what I want to do that's free (or real close to it), that I can be walked through, and that doesn't leave me open to some goon wrecking all my data?

Please help...

Thanks,
Darren

1) Your planning on doing this locally, yes? ie not over the internet (i hope, as 80 gigs over the net is absurd!!). Get yourself a firewire cable, and connect the 2 macs together - the quickest way to transfer files between 2 computers

2) Pass, but look into photocasting on Apple's site

3) Look into FolderShare, a free service that lets you sync files between 2 comps over the net, and access all your files on your comp from a remote location

I have an external drive I could take to my friend's house, but I was hoping to just do the transfers from the comfort of my own home. I figured I could just let them run overnight...

What about using VPN? Would that work for all of the things I want to do? Is it easy to set up?

Thanks,
Darren
