I was at a forum website and I noticed that the network menumeters icon was showing I was downloading 512KB/sec of data. Yet I did not download anything.

Is there any way to find out where this data is going and what it is?

Thanks to all who answer.

Install the X11 environment to let you run X applications, and then use Fink to install a utility called Ethereal. It's a packet sniffer that will show you all data flowing by on the local network. Launch X11, then open Ethereal as root. Then you can see everything. You can filter it to show only packets whose destination is your machine to see just what you are downloading.

Thanks tooki,

How safe is it to use Fink? (I have X11 installed but I never use it. )

Fink isn't especially more dangerous than any other software. It's just a package manager. The Linux package manager it's based on comes standard with every Debian distro out there, and Linux isn't really known for being a slouch on security.
