Only 2-3 months out of the year I am living in an area where I only get dial-up Internet. (Sad, I know.) During this time, I have access to other computers with dial-up, but I am considering paying the $45 extra to get a connected modem for my MacBook and use dial-up on it (because it almost feels better than not getting to use the Internet on it at all).

Before this, I've used dial-up on slower Dell machines (with probably 256 MB of memory) on which the connection is slow but bearable. On my new MacBook, I have 1 GB of memory and I'm sure the computer is just faster in general. How should dial-up perform on my MacBook? I understand it would be slow, but I'm wondering if it would possibly be a little bit faster than the older Dells, and thus justify the purchase of that extra modem.

Thanks!

Dial up is dial up. That means, if you're used to broadband, it's WAY SLOW. Sorry.

If you feel it is better to spend the $45then not use the MB at all for internet connection, go for it. Using Firefox and Tiger on a MB with 1 gig of ram should definitely be an improvement over a single processor Dell with a quarter of the memory, especially if you were using IE which is the slowest browser.

It's hard to tell how it will perform compared to the Dell.

If the Dell's modem was configured wrongly or badly, you might see an increase in speed. MIGHT. It also depends on the ISP, so one ISP might be faster, the other one slower.

There is no way in answering this question in general. Most likely, you'll see zero to negligable speed increase with you MB.
