I hope Im in the correct forum
Verizon in the east in some locations(mine) is offering fiber optic internet service for 30/M/one year. download speeds of 5Mbps
DSL through verizon at 780kbps is $15

but they insist that they have to install the software on your computer and set it up with their wireless router.

Im reluctanct to let someone fiddle with my Mac. after all, what are they installing?
\
any ideas or experience?

please direct this to a software forum if its a better place to ask about the software installation they might do

cheers

ugh...... 5mbps.... that's actually pretty good for DSL. i ordered a 3mpbs, but am getting half of it. Anyway, it's also a good deal that you'll only be paying $15/mo for it. I'm paying double that.... lol (only because cable is out of the question for my home).

As for having them tinker around with your Mac, ugh........ maybe it couldn't be so bad.... i mean, if you run into problems, they should know exactly how to address it. After all, they're the ones who did the installation. They'll know exactly what computer and networking hardware you have, which -should- make it easier for them to talk you through any troubleshooting steps.

However, I'd heavily scrutinize them and watch them EVERY step of the way during the installation, of course...... and maybe ask them what their doing at each step.

Otherwise, it's really not that hard to work with a Self-Install kit. My 12-year old cousin got his Self-Install Kit from AOL (DSL) and he set it up (hardware and software) in less than 20 minutes... (including boot and reboot times during installation). I did mine (Covad DSL) in 14-15 minutes.

thanks

DSL was self install, very easy which is why Im leary of why they need access to my computer. Im suspect that they want to install some monitoring stuff, you know make it a MS/PC

the 5Mbps was for Fiber. the 15/m was for 785kbps which is what i get. id be happy to stay with DSL at 15/m but at the end of the year (Dec) beats me what they might try to charge.

Im avoiding 'fixed costs' like the plague.

dialup wasn't so bad, this just consumes my time. it was nice to be able to be on line and use the phone.

any ideas why they insist on doing the installation?

They do the install because they want to make sure everything is setup properly and such since it is a new service.
Watch what they do, then you can reproduce it later.

So they can cut down your old copper wiring, preventing you from going back to dsl/pots or switching companies (and probably disqualifying you from some consumer protection/oversight/regulation).
The speed and price are tempting, but Verizon is up to their usual shady antics.

I think it's worth it for the 15mb or 30mb service, especially if you can get the TV service too, and for the most part verizon is one of the cheaper carriers for pots service so you won't be missing much.

And on ur maac they're not gonna do anything, just verify that everything is working, nothing to install as the router manages the connection.
