The building where I work is finally getting wireless internet. I have an early Powerbook G4 (400 Mhz, Titanium), running OS 9.2.2. What do I need to get (hardware? software?) to access the wireless network? I know nothing about wireless networks. I tried the search function, but most of the posts were about newer computers and about troubleshooting existing problems. I need some basic step-by-step advice.

Hi,

If the network you are connecting to uses 802.11b (most do) and either no encryption or WEP, your most compatible solution would be to purchase one of the original airport cards on eBay (NOT the airport EXTREME card). Unfortunately, since Apple doesn't sell the original airport cards anymore, the price on eBay has skyrocketed.

A cheaper solution by far would be to search eBay for one of the original Orinoco Gold PCMCIA cards. These cards used the same Lucent chipset as the original airport card. Although the company was taken over by Proxim, the old driver is available on version tracker and is apparently compatible with OS 9.2.2
