A while ago, I realized that a formerly closed wi-fi network was now available for anyone to join. After a lot of tinkering, (I also turned on the firewalls for each machine) I changed the settings, using the airport administrator setup utility. I created a 128-bit network (which is what I had had, once upon a time.)

Prior to that, I was able to connect my laptop to my desktop, or vice versa.

However, this morning I tried to do this, and I get nothing. When I browse, or click on the network icon, nothing happens. So -- I turned back off the firewalls and still, nothing.

I've now even tried dis-enabling the encryption, hoping this would do the trick. It hasn't. I have file sharing turned on in both machines. And I think those are the only other settings I would have changed.

Anyone have any ideas? I'd like to turn encryption back on, but I really do also need to network the two computers. Do I need to turn everything off, then turn everything back on, perhaps?

Any help gratefully appreciated.

UPDATE -- I unplugged the Airport Extreme base station for a few minutes and that -- with encryption turned off -- did allow me to connect the two machines.

I suspect, though, that if I turn back on the encryption I'll lose my ability to network again. I did some research when I set the thing up and know other people had some trouble. I don't recall seeing any solutions, though. Anyone have any?
