Look at LinksysInfo for some of the best (and best supported) third party firmwares, along with what is good and bad about each one.

You can also try putting the WAP54G on a high shelf; elevating mine helped me get a lot more range. Also mess with the orientation-turn it left or right in small increments and watch the signal quality level on your computer to see whether movements improve or decrease quality. You should also angle the antennas a bit off vertical. I have my antennas angled outward in the left-right plane, the left antenna angled forward and the right angled backward. This increases coverage by improving the antennas' ability to intercept signals from not-quite-vertical laptop antennas, and it really works.
