I had a v. 1 wrt54g router, which I killed by loading an incompatible firmware. It was almost 4 years old anyhow so perhaps time for a new router. Please suggest to me a similar router (version 4? wrt54g) that can use things like hyperwrt, etc.

Go with a new WRT54G. Just try not to get the Version 5 hardware-it was not as good as the previous hardware versions from all accounts. The WRT54GS had a faster processor and more ROM/RAM, so it was better for third party firmwares like HyperWRT, so if you can find one of those (the product channel from Linksys is notoriously inconsistent so it's quite possible) I'd recommend getting it.
