My neighbour in the next apartment has a D-Link DI-624 with WPA-PSK security on it that he is sharing with me. He is using WPA2 encryption and broadcasting SSID. He has the turbo mode for wireless turned off on the router.
I have a 1.25 MHz 15.1 inch Powerbook with OS 10.4.2 running.
1. In the airport tab if I select the network, it comes up with a box that says WPA Personal and a space to enter the password. Entering the password in this box does not establish a connection - I get a connection failed message. After some experimenting I have figured out that I have to use the ‘other’ tab in the Airport menu to be able to connect. However, it connects if I select WPA Personal as the security standard but won't connect if I select WPA2 Personal. I don't understand this as the router is using WPA2. Anyway, as a result of using the 'other' tab I can't get the password onto keychain so have to type password each time I reboot the computer.
2. Next, once I'm connected to the network, the powerbook picks up a junk DHCP address. My friend has DHCP enabled and his PC laptop is able to pick up an IP address fine. So I have forced a random address (192.168.0.xx) using the manual option on the PB. Works fine and I am connected to the net. Strange thing is it works exactly 10 mins and then stops working. If I put the PB to sleep and awake then works for another 10 mins. Or if I just change xx in the IP address to any other number, the connection works again for 10 mins. When the connection stops working after 10 mins I cannot even ping the router. Needless to say my friend's PC does not experience these problems.
Given that I cannot even ping the router it seems like the problem is with my Powerbook. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
