My neighbour in the next apartment has a D-Link DI-624 with WPA-PSK security on it that he is sharing with me. He is using WPA2 encryption and broadcasting SSID. He has the turbo mode for wireless turned off on the router.

I have a 1.25 MHz 15.1 inch Powerbook with OS 10.4.2 running.

1. In the airport tab if I select the network, it comes up with a box that says WPA Personal and a space to enter the password. Entering the password in this box does not establish a connection - I get a connection failed message. After some experimenting I have figured out that I have to use the ‘other’ tab in the Airport menu to be able to connect. However, it connects if I select WPA Personal as the security standard but won't connect if I select WPA2 Personal. I don't understand this as the router is using WPA2. Anyway, as a result of using the 'other' tab I can't get the password onto keychain so have to type password each time I reboot the computer.

2. Next, once I'm connected to the network, the powerbook picks up a junk DHCP address. My friend has DHCP enabled and his PC laptop is able to pick up an IP address fine. So I have forced a random address (192.168.0.xx) using the manual option on the PB. Works fine and I am connected to the net. Strange thing is it works exactly 10 mins and then stops working. If I put the PB to sleep and awake then works for another 10 mins. Or if I just change xx in the IP address to any other number, the connection works again for 10 mins. When the connection stops working after 10 mins I cannot even ping the router. Needless to say my friend's PC does not experience these problems.

Given that I cannot even ping the router it seems like the problem is with my Powerbook. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Bumped.

I have the same exact router, but the problems are with my Macbook. And my connection does drop exactly after 10 minutes too! It doesn't fix itself until I restart the comp.

If you're getting a "junk" IP, then you're NOT connected to anything. My first question is "are you SURE you're entering the password correctly? And if that's absolutely certain, are you sure you're running AirPort software that supports WPA2? Here's a link to Apple's download site for the appropriate AirPort software. Note that WPA2 requires a Mac with an AirPort Express card (I think you have that in your model).

^^ Does that apply to me too? I'm definitely connected to something because I was surfing the net. But exactly 10 minutes in, I can't access anymore sites.

Thanks for the input. I am able to browse the net so password is defiantely right. But I keep getting disconnected every 10 mins. I am glad someone else has had this problem. I still have no answer but have figured a work around.

We assigned a static IP on the D-Link router for the MAC address for my Powerbook and that seems to have done the job. Then manually configure the PB's IP address to the static IP address you have set on the router.

Hope it helps.
