If all goes well I will be closing on a new place tomorrow that is a single family home with a basement.

My preliminary plans are to have cat6 cable running into the den, basement and master bedroom, basically where are the big TVs will be :-). I was just going to buy some pre-crimped cable that has RJ45 from cablestogo.com or a similar site (any site suggestions would be appreciated). I guess I could buy a male to female adapter for the cable (would I lose any speed with an adapter?) so I can plug components into the network?

I'm assuming there is a gigabit wireless router out there (though I have yet to look) and I still am undecided as to the placement of the router.

Do you think I will get better reception throught out the house if the router is in the basement or in the den (1st floor)?

Any input on my plans would be much appreciated.

If you're interested in getting gigabit speeds, DO NOT use a bunch of adapters. Wire stuff directly, which includes using GOOD RJ-45 connectors and crimping them properly.

What exactly do you mean by "gigabit wireless router?" I don't think any wireless routers out there provide gigabit wired performance. You'd do better to get a gigabit wired router and connect a decent wireless access point to it-and get separate equipment doing separate jobs, which seems to be a Good ThingĀ® in most cases.

How many floors do you have? The basement is probably not the best place for a wireless access point anyway, but if you have a second floor, it's right out. I'd put the access point (I'm still talking about a separate access point and router here) on the main floor near the center of the house to provide the best coverage. My access point is in a front room (one floor) and it covers not only the whole 1800 square foot house, but the patio out back as well.
