I'm going to be in a large house this week working. the house has a D-Link DI-634M wireless router located on the second floor. my room is on the third floor. my powerbook can pick up the signal of the D-Link router but it's fairly weak and inconsistent. I brought with me an Airport Express and a Netgear WGR614 wireless router. unfortunately, there are no ethernet ports/cables run up anywhere near my room. in fact, their whole network is contained in the one room on the second floor with the wireless router.

my question is: is there anyway I can use either my Airport Express or my Netgear wireless router as a signal extender of some sort (one that extends the D-Link signal..) so that I can get better signal up in my room on the third floor?

Nope. You're basically talking about setting up a WDS. Each manufacturer has pretty much implemented their own versions of WDS making cross-brand interoperability basically impossible, so to extend the D-Link will likely require you to buy a D-Link extender.
