If you have a MIMO-capable router and you're using your normal 802.11g laptop ... will the MIMO help with interference? Or will the benefits of MIMO only work with pre-802.11n/proprietary products of the manufacturer?

hope that made sense any help would be great!

Standard 802.l1a and 802.11g APs only provide their full speed for users within a few meters, dropping down to much lower data rates as clients move farther away. However, an AP using MIMO (Multiple In Multiple Out) provides noticeably better performance in terms of range and signal strength and integrity for existing 802.11a and 802.11g clients.

Depending on your home/office construction and layout, you may see full speed for many meters with a normal 802.11g access point-I do. But MIMI does help in providing better signals a bit farther out. Of course people said that about "G" wireless when it first came out too. And MIMI MAY help with interference, depending on what the source is. Basically, if the interference is limited to a narrow band of frequencies then MIMO will help (as will changing your access point's channel), but if it's broadband interference (old microwave ovens, for example) then nothing will help.
