The Current DSL Modem I have doesn't let me do anything and nothing I change on it really seems to have effects.. Even the firewall when I change it doesn't open ports to allow connections in.. Makes me Made. I assume its just the modem im using.
So I am looking into a dsl modem. I have a 120 linksys router already And want to avoid getting a dsl modem like the one I got with a built in router that I can not shut off. If I shut it off I have connection problems to my modem and can't get on internet.
The Only dsl Router Lnksys has is this one but says its a router.
Does anyone have info on it if it is a router? or if it is can it be shut off?
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...VisitorWrapper
Or know of other products that do dsl modems?
I was hoping to get linksys to go with my linksys router and so they can stack.

Thanks For Any Info that anyone is able to provide me with.

BTW: The current modem I have is a Westell 6100
Which isn't even on westells product list because its bought out by a 3rd party (IE my ISP). So no support for it at all. Which makes me more mad.

The Westell 6100 should do everything you need. Here is Westell's support page for the 6100 including full documentation. Looking at that, you will probably want to set your configuration for "tunneling," which should make the thing act like a dumb modem instead of a modem/router. Read the whole thing to make sure. And the default username/password combination is "admin/password." If you're a Verizon customer then the username is your Verizon.net username and the password is your Verizon.net password. There's also a hardware rest button so if you have a problem you can clear the configuration and start over.

It's possible that your ISP locked it (which ISP, by the way?), but not likely. Most of the time they just configure it and give it to the customer. Sticking with the modem the ISP provided can be important; there are a number of configuration settings that can make the difference between actually connecting and just sitting there.

By the way, almost ALL DSL modems are also routers. My Westell 516 is-though a simple one. It's configured to bridge between DSL and my LAN, so it looks like just a modem. That's the way I like it, and you probably will too.

most all dsl modems... wow thats going to be hard to find..
Thanks for that page. Its the first page I have seen on this modem.

I got Verizon. Who dont make me happy but they get me better connection speed than charter did with cable.

I dont see a tunneling thing on the vc config page. would it be mode? the only thing under it is Bridge, Routed Bridge and Proxy Bridge.

That is how the settings currently are for the vc page which sets up my modems connection info.

are you talking about the modem password thing? the password for it was not my verizon info.. But since i have had routers in the past I figured it out quick. I have been tweaking with this modem and no mater what I do to my Firewall settings can't get ports open. I know I only got 3 ports open that are tcp (got this info by using a php port scanner). And no mater what I do to that firewall even if I Customize it and remove all settings it still doesn't work.
Thats why im looking for a new modem. I cant seem to make changes with it to affect anything. I dont think verizon would block everything on me.. Charter didn't seem to do this. But with slow connection I couldn't keep it for gamming.

Sometimes an ISP is less than consistent in how they set up user equipment-and sometimes they are just plain inconsistent. That's why I included the password thing: sometimes Verizon seems to lock the modem, sometimes they change the password, and sometimes they don't do either.

Tunneling is under the PPPoE VC settings. It's a dumb name for "make this device simply bridge between PPPoE and a LAN."

If you're trying to set the modem's firewall to "off" by using the settings on page 78 of the manual (i.e. choosing "None" in the Firewall Configuration page), and it's not working, I think your modem is not working properly. In other words, you should be able to get Verizon to replace it with one that works. If it's not very old, they should simply send you a new one. This is definitely a tech support issue-push 'em on it.

I dont see a PPPoE VC settings. VC Configuration is the only page that has VC in it.

I guess I will try to complain to verizon again... about the modem..
Which they then treat me as stupid trying to tell me how to fix it.. and treat me more as if i was retarted. I wish they had a line were I could talk to somebody who wouldn't treat me as if I was stupid.

Looking closer at the screenshot you posted, I saw the "mode" box in the middle. What are the options for that box? Is one of them "Bridge" or "Unrouted Bridge"? That's what you want, really.

It looks like your modem has a somewhat different firmware version that the manual shows, too. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an upgrade firmware version on Westell's site. Maybe there's one elsewhere.

For more information and support, look at the Broadband Reports Westell support page, as well as their BellSouth Forum FAQ which devotes considerable space to Westell modem issues.

Yea it was Bridge, Routed Brdige, Proxy Bridge.

But I got it.
I had to change Mode to Bridge. And then in my Router Settings set up gateway and crap to get my proper ip and stuff. Had to reset my modem because of a bad ip change. But its all working now. Besides the fact I can't access my modem any more but who gives. I dont need to access it anymore.

Finally got it to ignore my modem. and its ingoring my modem firewall so its all working now

Thanks for the help

Glad to be there for you. You WILL be able to access the modem later-by directly connecting to it with a cable, and using Network Preferences to "renew DHCP lease." But as you say, you don't need to and that's what you want. GREAT!

well I dont know why at first but had problems after a few hours. I think its was because of dynamic ip they force. And I had static set in router. So messed with that got it working finally.
I have my router on 10.10.1.1 and modem on default 192.168.1.1 So I am able to access it through the web again. Im leaving my modem all default
